Rally Towels Screen Printing Process
Once we know what towel you want, the Rally Towels staff will prepare screens for printing your design. A screen must be prepared for each color used. We also select an appropriate screen for the design and the type of ink. Highly detailed designs are printed with finer screens than simpler ones.
The screen is made of mesh stretched on a frame. First, the screen is coated with an emulsion that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light. It is then covered with a film printed with the parts of the design that will be in one color. Then, the screen is exposed to ultraviolet light, which hardens the emulsion in the places not protected by the film. After that, the screen is sprayed with water to wash the emulsion from the areas to be printed. The screen now has areas of open mesh for the parts of the design that will be printed with that color.
Then, we secure the towel for printing, and place the screen over the towel, but not touching it. The operator takes a flood bar, also called a fill bar, and passes it over the screen from the back to the front. The flood bar fills the mesh of the screen with ink in the areas not covered with the hardened emulsion. Once the screen is filled with ink, the operator uses the rubber blade of a squeegee to push the screen down to the towel, starting at the front and moving to the back of the screen.
As the screen is pushed down, capillary action draws ink down through the mesh and onto the towel. By selecting the right type of mesh for the design and the type of ink used, Rally Towels Screen Printing can control how much ink reaches the towel. As the squeegee moves on, the screen comes back up, leaving the ink on the towel.
