Founded on July 8, 1933, by Arthur J Rooney, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now the seventh oldest NFL franchise. Up until 1940 the Pittsburgh Steelers were known as the Pirates; however for the first 40 years they continued to struggle, until 1972 when they won the AFC Central Division title. Then, following the Steelers victory in Super Bowl IX when Art Rooney was awarded the Vince Lombardi trophy, the entire sports world cheered because Rooney had become one of the most popular sports figures in the world.
Steelers History
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC. Ownership of the Pittsburgh Steelers has stayed within the Rooney family since its inception in 1933. Dan Rooney, Arthur Rooney’s son, owned the Steelers from 1988 until he passed away in 2017. Today, the franchise is mostly controlled by Art Rooney II, Dan Rooney’s son. The franchise has an extremely wide fan base, known as Steeler Nation
Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame
There’s a long list of heroes in the Pittsburgh Steelers from the 1970s, but it starts with Chuck Noll, Head Coach, who took over the team in 1969. A long line of stars such as quarterback Terry Bradshaw, linebackers Jack Lambert and Jack Ham, defensive tackle Joe Greene, running-back Franco Harris, and cornerback Mel Blount were part of a team that many say was the finest pro football has ever seen. And, in their first years of eligibility, all were honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including Chuck Noll.
The Steelers are the only team in the NFL to have its logo on only one side (the right side) of the helmet. Arthur Rooney instructed Jack Hart, who at that time was field and equipment manager, to do this just to see how it looked. It became so popular that the team decided it should stay that way permanently.
Ever since the club’s inception, the Pittsburgh Steelers have used black and gold as their colors, except in the 1943 merger with the Philadelphia Eagles when they wore the Eagles colors which were green and white.
