Originally founded as the Titans of New York in 1959, it was in 1963 that an investment group led by Sonny Werblin paid $1 million, took control of the bankrupt franchise, and the team was renamed the Jets. The franchise known as the New York Jets joined the NFL in 1970 following the merger of the AFL and NFL. Since the Jets were going to play close to LaGuardia Airport at Shea Stadium, the team was aptly named the Jets. In 1960 the Jets began playing at the Polo Grounds, then under new ownership and with a new name the team moved in 1964 to Shea Stadium; moving again in 1984 to the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
Located in the New York metropolitan area, the New York Jets compete in the NFL as a member club of the AFC East division. Their headquarters are in Florham Park, New Jersey. It’s interesting to note that the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is shared by the Jets and the New York Giants.
Today, the Jets are placed at No. 12 on the Forbes list of most valuable sports franchises and are worth $1.23 billion.
It was in 1968 that, for the first time, the Jets advanced to the play-offs, going on to defeat the Baltimore Colts at Super Bowl III. The Jets became the first team in the AFL to defeat an NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship game. The Jets have appeared in the play-offs 13 times since 1968, and have appeared four times in the AFC Championship Games. However, they have never again appeared at the Super Bowl, which, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints, makes them one of three teams in the NFL to win their only Super Bowl appearance.
Besides the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns (neither have reached the Super Bowl), the Jets have the longest drought among today’s NFL franchises.
Opening in the year 2008, the Jets training facility is the Atlantic Health Jets Training Centre, located in Florham Park. Their annual training camp sessions are currently held in Florham Park.
Three players stand out in the history of the Jets and these three have been honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Namath in 1985, Maynard in 1987, and Curtis Martin in 2012; Coach Ewbank was also honored in 1978.
Interestingly, when the NFL recently announced rules on punishing team members for kneeling during the national anthem, Christopher Johnson, co-owner and chairman of the New York Jets, announced that should any of his players decide to kneel he would cover their fines. Saying that of course he preferred that the players stand, he still understood that they had a need to protest. Christopher said that his players are on the front lines of some complicated issues that everyone is struggling with and he had no intention of coming down hard on them.
The Jets franchise is co-owned by Woody Johnson, Christopher Johnson’s brother.
