On 22 November 1959 a Boston businessman, Billy Sullivan Jr, secured the eighth and final franchise in the new American Football League. A panel of Boston sportswriters chose the team name “Patriots” in keeping with their New England heritage. Ron Burton, a North Western University running back was selected one week later as their first draft choice, and Gerhardt Schwedes, a Syracuse running back was their first territorial choice.
Today the Patriots are based in the Greater Boston region and compete in the NFL as a member club of the AFC East Division.
Patriots History
In the franchise history of the Patriots they have appeared at the Super Bowl ten times (which is more than any other team) with eight of those appearances following the arrival of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick in the year 2000. Today the Patriots are becoming one of the most successful teams in the history of the NFL: without a losing season since 2001 they have won 15 AFC East titles in 17 seasons. Some of the records set by the Patriots franchise include –
- In the year 2007 they achieved an undefeated 16 game regular season;
- Between 2003 and 2012 they achieved the most wins in a ten-year period (126);
- The Patriots scored the most consecutive division titles won by any team in the history of the NFL (between 2009 and 2017 they won nine straight division titles);
- They hold the longest winning streak of play-off games and regular season games in the history of the NFL (between October 2003 and October 2004 they achieved a 21-game streak);
- The Patriots currently hold the record for reaching the most Super Bowls (eight) and winning (five) by a quarterback-head Coach tandem.
The New England Patriots were disciplined during the 2007 season for videotaping the signals of a New York Jets defensive coach and, although it’s not illegal to videotape opposing coaches, it’s supposed to be done in specific designated areas. The Patriots were fined $250,000 by the NFL, Bill Belichick, Head Coach of the Patriots, was fined $500,000, and the team was docked their first-round selection in the NFL’s 2008 Draft. Even today, the Patriots still have a renowned rivalry with the New York Jets.
