The Miami Dolphins were founded in 1966 by actor-comedian Danny Thomas and attorney-politician Joe Robbie. The Dolphins, who became the ninth member of the AFL, are a professional football team who compete in the NFL as a member club of the NFC East Division. The Dolphins are the longest-running professional sports team in Florida, and as at the year 2017 the Dolphins franchise was valued at approximately $2.6 US billion. Interestingly, as of August 2017 the Dolphins had roughly 3.05 million Twitter followers and Facebook fans!
The Dolphins are based in Davie, Florida, and their home games are played in Miami Gardens at the Hard Rock Stadium. The second tier of the Hard Rock Stadium is dedicated to the Miami Dolphin Honor Roll, where former players, owners, coaches and other contributors are honored.
The Dolphins first appeared at the Super Bowl in Super Bowl VI, but were beaten 24-3 by the Dallas Cowboys. All up, the Dolphins have won 3 out of 5 Super Bowls, becoming the first football team to appear at the Super Bowl for three consecutive years; namely 1971, 1972, and 1973 – they’re also one of only two teams to win back-to-back Super Bowls – 1972 and 1973. Unfortunately, they last appeared at the Super Bowl in 1984. However, the Dolphins have a rich history that includes two Super Bowl championships and five conference titles; they’re also the only football team in history to complete an entire season undefeated. Their season in 1972 finished without a loss and ended in Super Bowl VII victory.
Perhaps the Dolphins’ most renowned player was Dan Marino, widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of American football. He was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Despite all his success, however, during his 17-year career the Dolphins only advanced once to the Super Bowl, and that was in 1985, resulting in a loss of 38-16 to the San Francisco 49ers. Between 1983 and 1999 Marino broke many league-passing records, becoming one of the best passers in NFL history. Before retiring after the 1999 season Marino led the Miami Dolphins to Super Bowl XIX, 10 play-off appearances, and five division titles.
The Miami Dolphins played unsuccessfully in Super Bowl XVII, then again unsuccessfully in Super Bowl XIX.
During their early football days the Miami Dolphins were trained by perhaps the most successful Head Coach in the history of professional football, Don Shula. Under his 26-season reign as Head Coach the Dolphins recorded losses in only two seasons. In 1995 Shula retired, and is today referred to as the winningest coach in the history of NFL.
In 2002 the Miami Dolphins began what was to become the longest post-season drought in the history of the NFL. Desperate to turn things around, winning coach Bill Parcells was hired as Head of Football Operations in 2007. In 2008 the Miami Dolphins posted 11 wins and five losses and won a divisional championship. Just before the 2010 season Parcells left the Dolphins, while the Dolphins continued their mediocre play.
