The professional football team known as the Cleveland Browns was founded in 1945 by Arthur McBride and Robert Gries. The Cleveland Browns would go on to become a highly successful professional sports team; so successful in fact that between the years 1946 and 1983 they made the play-offs 21 times and they won 8 league championships and 18 divisional titles.
Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the Cleveland Browns compete in the NFL as a member club of the AFC North Division. Their home games are played at First Energy Stadium. The Cleveland Browns’ official colours are orange, brown, and white.
In 1946, the Cleveland Browns played in the American Football Conference, then joined the NFL at the end of the 1949 season. Their first Head Coach was Paul E Brown, and he stayed Head Coach until 1962. In fact, Arthur McBride named the team after Paul Brown. For the four seasons they played in the league the Browns won the AFC championship, then when they switched to the NFL they won the NFL championship in their first year, and they won again in 1954, 1955, and 1964.
In 1954 and 1955 the Cleveland Browns were successful and won two league championships, but things went downhill in 1956 when several players retired, including their quarterback, Otto Graham. They then drafted Jim Brown, who went on to become arguably the greatest running back in the history of professional football. Under the Haslam ownership, the Browns had six seasons where they went through four general managers and four head coaches, none who achieved much success.
Art Modell purchased the Cleveland Browns in 1961, then in 1995 he announced that he wanted to move the team to Baltimore, Maryland. Finally, after much discussion, the Baltimore Ravens were established in 1996 as a new franchise. Following this they had two winning seasons, one play-off appearance, and no play-off wins. It’s been noted that the Browns franchise has a lack of stability with quarterbacks, with 28 players starting in the position since 1999. At 15 seasons, the Browns now hold the longest NFL active play-off drought. Under head coach Hue Jackson, in 2016 and 2017 the Cleveland Browns suffered the worst two-year stretch in the history of the NFL.
The Cleveland Browns are the only NFL team without a helmet logo, with the logo-less helmet serving as their official logo. Over the years the Cleveland Browns have used various promotional logos: between 1957 and 1960 the players’ numbers were painted on their helmets; then in 1965 a “CB” logo was created; however, the Browns’ helmets for most of their history has been a plain burnt-orange colour with a dark brown stripe on the top, divided by a white stripe.
In 1960 Art Modell got rid of the “Brownie Elf” mascot because he felt it was too childish, but the current ownership has revived it. A brown and orange dog has been used for a number of Brown functions, but generally the primary trademark of the Cleveland Browns is the orange helmet without a logo.
