Our last blog post covered the history of the Los Angeles Lakers and rally towels. In this post, you’ll learn a little more about another professional NBA team that shares the same hometown: the LA Clippers.
While the Clippers haven’t been around as long as the Lakers have, they too have experienced a few relocations and name changes. They got their start as the Buffalo Braves in 1970 with two other expansion teams: the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. 8 years later, they moved to across the country and became the San Diego Clippers–named after the sailing ships that often passed through the San Diego Bay. When they moved from San Diego to Los Angeles, they decided to keep the team name–much like the Lakers when they moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles.
The proximity of their rival turned out to be unfortunate for them. The success of the Lakers cast a shadow over the Clippers, who were unable to maintain success during their regular season or in the playoffs. In the last 10 years, they have had much greater success, starting with their acquisitions of Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and Chris Paul. They even won their first division title in 2013 and returned the next season to claim the 2014 division title.
