This highlight on the Detroit Pistons is brought to you by Rally Towels, helping you to make memories one towel at a time.
Founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1941, the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons started out in the NBL (National Basketball League). In 1948, they joined the BAA (Basketball Association of America) and became the Fort Wayne Pistons. When the NBL and the BAA merged to become the NBA in 1949, they kept their name, but they became the Detroit Pistons when the franchise moved to Detroit in 1957.
The Pistons were successful from the start, winning NBL championships in 1944 and 1945 and winning the World Professional Basketball Tournament 3 consecutive times (1944-1946). Over the years, they have won 3 NBA championships (1989, 1990, 2004), won 7 conference titles, and 9 division titles. Although they had a successful start, the Pistons struggled to maintain success from the late ‘50s to the early ‘80s. They began their 1980-81 season with 21 consecutive losses–an NBA record at the time.
From 1985-87, the team acquired several key players through drafts and trades that would help them build their defensive team and eventually win the 1989 Championship: Joe Dumars, Rick Mahorn, John Salley, Dennis Rodman, and Adrian Dantley. Although Grant Hill was drafted in 1994, the team struggled slightly in the early ‘90s. In the 2000s, they came back with a vengeance, winning 6 consecutive conference finals and their third NBA championship game.
