At Rally Towels, we believe in making memories one towel at a time. This blog post celebrates some of the memories that the Denver Nuggets–a professional NBA (National Basketball Association) team–have made over the years.
Starting out in the ABA (American Basketball Association) in 1967, they were originally called the Denver Larks. That name didn’t last long, as they changed their name to the Denver Rockets before they played a single game. In 1974, they changed their name yet again as the ABA-NBA merger was expected within the next few years and the NBA had the Houston Rockets. After holding a contest for a new team nickname, they became the Denver Nuggets.
During their time in the ABA, they made it to every playoff, gaining division titles in 1970, 1975, and 1976 and making it to the finals in 1976. After joining the NBA, they won division titles in their first 2 seasons, as well as in 1985, 1988, 2006, 2009, and 2010. Not only did the Nuggets start with some successful wins, but they set the league scoring record of 126.5 points per game for the 1981-82 season. Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe were hugely responsible for this, as they individually averaged 25 points per game.
In the late ‘80s to early ‘90s, the team saw a decline in their success. In 1991, they drafted Dikembe Mutombo. Denver’s 1993-94 season, they made history as the first 8th-seeded team to to defeat a 1st seeded team in the playoffs. With ownership changes, the team struggled again until drafting Carmelo Anthony in 2003 and acquiring Allen Iverson in 2006.
