In the NBA for just under 4 decades, the Dallas Mavericks were formed in 1980. They made the playoffs for the first time in 1984, but it took them 3 more years to win a division title. Returning to the playoffs in 1989, they had much less success and they were unable to make the playoffs again until 2001. The next decade was spent losing players to injuries–some of which were season-ending or prompted players to retire. Picking up Jason Kidd in the 1994 draft brought some life to the team, but their lack of success and failure to maintain a head coach for more than a season caused issues.
In 2000, entrepreneur Mark Cuban bought the team and sought to rebuild the team. His efforts paid off. The team made it back to the playoffs in 2001 and were well on their way to winning titles. In the last decade and a half, they were able to win 2 division titles (2007 and 2010), 2 conference titles (2006 and 2011), and even an NBA championship in 2011. Following their victory in 2011, they have made it to the playoffs but have failed to win any titles.
